Ongoing Opportunities
*Math Tutors Needed! Are you interested in helping kids learn math? The intervention team at Muir is looking for a few volunteers to support our youngest mathematicians. The role would be working with a kindergarten small group during the math skills lab from 12:25-12:55 (every day except Wednesday). Minimum commitment would be at least one day a week (consistent day of the week preferably), but more is welcome. No previous tutoring experience required. If interested, reach out to: kjmchegg@seattleschools.org
*Shelving in the Library - looking for a peaceful and satisfying way to volunteer at the school? Teacher Librarian JK Burrell is looking for someone to help with shelving once every 1-2 weeks. Additionally, if any families have finished with their Legos and would like to donate them, the library would love to have them. Message JK Burwell at joburwell@seattleschools.org if interested.
*Reading/Partners: John Muir is continuing our after-school reading program this year and we would love some parent tutor volunteers! Volunteers will receive tutor training on the Reading Partners program and then work one-on-one with the same student during the school year. Tutors are provided with an easy-to-follow curriculum that includes step-by-step lesson plans, as well as an on-boarding and training session. No previous experience is necessary. Tutoring happens Mondays and Tuesdays, right after school: 2:40-3:40. We prefer folks to commit to 2 hrs/week for the school year, but if you can commit to only Monday or Tuesday, we are happy to have you. Volunteers should have their own laptop device and reliable WiFi for lesson prep. See link to register:

Please send any questions to Julie Thompson, the site coordinator, at jathompson3@seattleschools.org for any additional information.
*Join the Literacy Lions - Call for Volunteers: We invite you to become part of our Literacy Lions team and help us meet our school's vision of inclusivity and personal learning goals for all students. By volunteering, you'll spend time in the building with our wonderful students and dedicated staff, providing essential support for every learner.
Position Overview:
Commitment: Volunteer 1-4 times a week for one hour.
Student Interaction: Work with K-2 students on individualized sight words.
Tailored Learning: Students will have differentiated sight words to practice at home and school.
Consistent Support: The system remains the same throughout the year, with ongoing assistance from our reading intervention team.
Community Building: Connect with other families and help create a supportive environment for all learners.
If you’re interested in making a difference, please reach out to Kate Schueler (kmschueler@seattleschools.org)
*Lunch or recess duty: John Muir is always in need of parents to help monitor games and support transitions during lunch and recess. Shifts are available Monday-Friday from 11:30am-1:00pm (90 mins each day), although we are in particular need for volunteers to cover Wednesdays from 11:35-12:20.
Board committees: The new PTA needs volunteers to support various volunteer committees (e.g., programmatic/enrichment planning, fundraising, community engagement, and communications).
Note about classroom volunteering: if you are interested in volunteering in your child’s class, please know that it is up to the individual teacher to determine if (and how many) opportunities are available for volunteers. Please message the teacher directly.
